Is this site becoming what it's aspiring to be?
@Iain, not sure about your opinion of FOSS users and the lack of quality due to the low entry cost. I've always found far more insightful help and discussions on FOSS mailing lists (precise and polite questions always get better treatment, as everywhere) than on some major proprietary systems forums. Perhaps it has to do with where insightful people already hang out.

New close reasons - Proposals (July 2013)
I'm not sure about "home setting" in the wording. For example, I'm not sure whether I can assume this question is for home use, yet, I'd certainly flag it to be moved to SU (I can't think why it would be on-topic on SF, unless I'm really mistaken).

Are RaspberryPi's ever on topic for ServerFault?
Such users could be valuable contributors to SF (both asking and also sometimes answering questions). After all, SF (and the SE sites in general) are places to exchange knowledge. If the topic can be relevant, I'm not sure where or why the problem arises really matters.

@WesleyDavid, I think the problem with this strict definition of "professional" is that you cut out people who would want to expand their skills outside their strict work hours. It's quite frequent (possibly not always healthy) for people interested in IT in general to explore technologies they don't know outside the strict remit of their employment, with the hardware they can get hold of at home. I'd say you can learn a lot of reasonably advanced sysadmin skills (which could lead to questions relevant on SF) by using Linux VMs (for example) on a desktop at home.

I realise most people here disagree with my point of view, fair enough. I just think it makes more sense to treat an Nginx question as a server software configuration question (on topic on SF), giving people the opportunity to answer. If it works on the RPi, everyone's a winner (including people who would have the same problem on a proper server); if the traditional suggestions don't work, then it's worth moving the question to the RPi site.

That's not a bad point of view, but there's still a good chance that SF users are likely to give better Nginx configuration answers than RPi.SE users.

Here is an example question that would be off topic be the simple mention of the Pi by your standards, but the fact that we don't know makes leaves it on topic. (From the date, it's probably not running on a Pi indeed...)

"Askers will not get answers from ServerFault if they are using non-server hardware to make a solution of any kind." Not really, I'm sure I can find a large number of good SF questions that don't mention the hardware on which they run at all (perhaps the amount of RAM sometimes). What you're suggesting is that it's better not to say on which hardware you're running at all (relevant to the question or not) rather than saying it just it case it might have something to do with the problem but also make the question off-topic.
