Discussion / off topic canonical?
@longneck, I've come across at least one instance where I voted to close a question as a dupe of another, without realising that other one had already been closed.

Answering your own question: officially encouraged and unofficially despised?
So you've consulted with "every person" who read your post to ensure they understood the "question"? How else could you possibly come to such an absurd conclusion? You failed to consult me for one and I did not find a question in it. You need to learn the difference between questions and statements.

If he's sick of the bitching maybe it's time something was done to rectify the issues and thereby remove the need to bitch.

Is "don't personally know the answer to this question" a reason to close? How to stop it?
@user165568, you have a serious attitude problem. If you're intending to be part of SF I suggest you learn to control your temper tantrums and also learn to express yourself more clearly, calmly and politely.

Should I edit my old unanswered question or start a new one?
And having a question closed as a duplicate of one that is also closed is really annoying. :)

ServerFault Fundamentalism
You asked for a tool to do a job. That's a shopping question. Had you described a problem and asked for solutions your question would still be open. The difference is is very significant and makes the question either on or off topic.

Should we discourage the use of PPTP
@tylerl, no, that's not real world. Real world is where it happens to someone without their knowledge or permission in a non-lab situation. Using that tool on myself is a lab situation, which is my entire point.

Should we discourage the use of PPTP
@tylerl, have you ever known of a single real world instance of PPTP being compromised? If you have you're the only person I know who has.

Should we discourage the use of PPTP
No, that could never have been said for telnet because it's a clear text protocol designed strictly for use within a closed and private network. There is absolutely no comparison.

A better /about Question and Answer
Having had a brief look at the list of questions all I can say is that many of them are either very poor or downright off topic. That query could almost be used as a garbage detector.
