Changing the FAQ: Home networks
@sysadmin1138, I wasn't referring to Jeff's wording, which hadn't been posted yet. I was referring to softening the differentiation between professional IT and home stuff.

Changing the FAQ: Home networks
Thanks Jeff, that's how I was interpreting things but now you've really cleared up that point. However, about the "and IT professionals" bit... I'm sure many of us have different interpretations for what is IT and I'd like to see some clarification for this context. e.g. Is someone working (professionally) as a unit assembler for a PC maker an IT professional? How about a photocopier service tech? Both are certainly professionals in IT related fields but would they qualify as IT professionals for SF? The FAQ as it stands says "yes".

adding new tags
Which of course make much more sense than creating tags without questions. :)

Should licensing questions be closed?
I've come back here after seeing yet another flurry of licensing questions and am now of the opinion that while your "Closed because..." might be a bit too specific perhaps we should have a somewhat more general option, such as "Closed because this question should be asked of the vendor".

Sick of "unprofessional" questions
your answer has failed to take into account the major difference between SO and SF, apart from the subject matter itself. i.e. SO is intended for both amateurs and professionals, whereas SF is intended for professionals only. As a result we need to take a rather different approach in determining what questions are appropriate or not. Questions from amateurs should be made welcome on SO but should be actively discouraged on SF, hence the very question Mark has asked here.

Sick of "unprofessional" questions
As very clearly stated in the FAQ this site is for those of us who are already pros. Nevertheless, those who don't qualify can get a LOT of benefit from reading both the questions and answers. It's just that we don't need the site made worthless by being swamped with inappropriate questions (or answers).

Sick of "unprofessional" questions
"where would newbies go if they are learning to become IT Pro's"? Somewhere else of course. SF is for those who already ARE pros. At least that's what the FAQ says. No new tag is required. A new site perhaps but not a tag.

Why limit site to "many desktop PCs" and no mention of laptops?
It's worth noting that from what I've seen so far nobody else has had a problem with that wording and we see a fair number of questions relating to the administration of multiple laptops.

What's the worst question you've ever seen on SF.com?
+1 Both those questions should have been closed immediately, instead of being fed with equally useless answers. BTW, the question being asked and answered here is no better.

why was my question about mac mini servers closed?
You're right, being a professional IS about attitude. That was my point, although I could have made it better. Regardless of scale an admin should understand the difference between a server and a workstation used for server roles.

What information should I include or obfuscate in my posts?
+1 That last sentence pretty well sums it up.

How do you ask a question about server fault after reading the faq and not finding clarification?
While I agree about the single computer with a problem issue, don't be too quick to judge the admin's professionalism based on what is being run. I have to maintain an XP machine running a 15 year old 16 bit program. Nothing else can talk to our time clock. The programmer has passed away. The source code has been either lost or destroyed and nobody has so far been able to reverse engineer the encryption used. To replace the program we must replace the entire time clock system, which is simply not cost justified.

Do questions about managing and troubleshooting gaming server software belong here?
@ccornet, when considering sending questions over here please bear in mind the intended SF user base. i.e. IT professionals, not just anybody who "runs" a server.
