On If you don't know what's relevant that's OK you mention popping into chat after the question is asked. There has been multiple times I've done the opposite. I've gone to a site (granted I get the new member bonus) and then pop into their chat room if I'm fuzzy about my question there being on-topic. I've had times where the regulars/mods on those SE sites will say "reword your title as...and change your focus to..." and I'll do as they say and it ends up staying on-topic that way. It shows them up front to help watch for my question too from runaway VTCs just cause I'm new.

Feb 10, 2014 at 22:16 | comment | added | user9517 | @lonstar: Considerable time and effort has gone into making the close reasons and the wording that surrounds them as pink and fluffy as possible. There is a help center, a tour and tour. There are excellent Q&A like the one above yet people mange to avoid it all. If people still can't ask a topical question then there isn't much more than we can reasonably do to help them.

Wording changed based on comments/feedback
|
Feb 10, 2014 at 21:41 | comment | added | voretaq7 Mod | @lonstar I've made a wording change based on your comment. I'm not sure how we can be "gentler" though - A question which is so vague as to be unanswerable is a bad question, and should be placed On Hold using the "Too Broad" or "Unclear what you're asking" reason until such time as it is improved. I'm sorry if that seems harsh, but that's explicitly what we're supposed to be doing with the "On Hold" / "Close" system. The bar is already set so low - I'm really against lowering it further (just shut down SF at that point because it's a 100% overlap with SU).
Feb 10, 2014 at 20:30 | comment | added | lonstar | After viewing some of the exchanges that go on around SE, I suggest modifying "Nobody on this site knows your environment as well as than you do." to "Nobody on this site can see your system." Questions that seem to annoy the old-timers most are those who are doing or experiencing something for the first time. They don't know the terms or the rules and it just seems to be so often that they're punished for that ignorance. No one wants to do someone's homework for them or help a body shop mess up healthcare.gov but isn't there some kind of gentler introduction than "closed as off topic"?
