I disagre with the idea that it's beneficial to anyone to attempt drawing this line in the sand, though I respect your inclination to keep things legit. Luckily, the community at large does a good job of voting the worst questions to close.
I think taking questions from script kiddies seriously would be just as annoying as doing kids' homework for them. Though I'd rather err on the side of not throwing out babies with bathwater - more specifically, I still want to encourage students to participate (as they're the next batch of professional users) - just as a lot of dodgy-sounding security qustions may be coming from the next generation of white hats. Naive questions sound pretty similar to malicious questions trying to sound innocent, dont' they?
And don't sweat the occasional downvote, question migration, or even harsh comment. The vocal minority is sometimes just in a crabby mood, but 99.9% of the community are unbothered by your initial missteps. Otherwise you'll know, because you'll hear from a mod. ;)
Now we just need a feature to black-hole a tag (the way [subjective] was perma-killed) so people are forced to use, say, mac-address or mac-os... Or did that go in and I was snoozing that day?
I hate the idea of locking someone out of the site. But it's a better option than driving away multiple people with incorrect information and unexplainable rage. Sometimes the cost is just too high.
